When to go to South America?

The best time to visit South America depends on the exact region you want to travel to. When we take a look at our interactive best time to visit world map and focus on the South American continent, we see that:

In the south of the South America, Chile is best visited from December to March and Argentina is best visited from December to July. Both countries don’t have a really bad time to visit.

A bit more up north: for Bolivia and Peru the best time to go is during the dry season from June to September, this is the best time to visit both the Andes and the Amazon regions of both countries.

Southeast of Bolivia we find Paraguay. Paraguay is best visited during the dry season (winter), when the temperature is more comfortable and the humidity is the lowest. The exact opposite applies to the period from December to February.

Further east we find Brazil, which is a typical year-round destination. We find the months February (e.g. Carnival) to March and September to November the absolute best months to visit Brazil. During these months you can perfectly visit several regions of South Americas largest country.

South of Brazil, we find Uruguay. Uruguay is especially known for its nice beaches, these can best be visited from December to March. People that visit Uruguay with a different purpose also can go during spring and autumn. It can be recommendable to avoid Uruguay during the colder winter months of June to August.

When we move to the northern part of South America, we find Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands in the extreme west. The beaches of Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands are best visited from January up to March, or April. The best time to go to the Andes region of Ecuador is during the dry season from June to August.

More to the east we find Colombia and Venezuela. The best time to go to these two countries is during the dry season from December to March, when the rainfall and humidity is the lowest. Colombia can also perfectly well be visited from July to August.

In the northwest of South America we encounter Guyana and Suriname, these countries have exactly the same best time to visit. That is during the two dry seasons: from February to April and from September to October. People that want to see the impressive waterfalls of Guyana should go around the transition from the wet to the dry season: end of January and end of August.

French Guiana can best be visited during the dry season from August to November, when the temperature is the most comfortable and the humidity the lowest.

Finally, the Falkland Islands and the South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands are best visited from December to March.
