When to go to Indonesia?

The best time to visit Indonesia in terms of weather and accessibility is the 'dry season'. The absolute best time to travel to Indonesia is from June through September.

Except for destinations like Bali and Kalimantan, it can be advisable to avoid traveling to Indonesia from December to February. Roads can be blocked, ferries can be out-of-service and some National Parks are closed.

The best time to visit Indonesia

Due to its location close to the equator, Indonesia has a fairly even climate year-round. Meaning that Indonesia can be visited year-round. However, timing can optimize your holiday experience significantly. For example: roads can be blocked in the wet season, or volcano’s can be closed for climbing for safety reasons.

The absolute best time to visit Indonesia is during the dry season (June to November). The best month(s) to travel to Indonesia in terms of weather and accessibility are June through September. The ‘wet season’ is from November to April. In some parts of Indonesia the difference between the dry and the ‘wet season’ is minimal (e.g. Kalimantan and Bali), in other parts the difference can be more significant (e.g. Nusa Tenggara). The ‘dry season’ climate is hotter and drier than the ‘wet season’ climate. The rain tends to come in sudden tropical downpours, but it can also rain non-stop for days.

The climate of Bali and Kalimantan shows little difference between the dry and the wet season. Therefore, December and January are also good months to travel to these regions, the higher water levels during this time of the year even improves the accessibility of rivers and creeks.

The neutral months to visit Indonesia

The ‘shoulder season’ is from March to May and from October to November. During these periods the country is in the transition from the ‘wet season’ to the ‘dry season’, or vice versa. This is a fair season to travel to Indonesia and prices tend to be lower, by avoiding the holiday season crowds. The weather is on average very acceptable. For some attractions, like a trekking on the Mount Rinjani, the month May is said to be the best month to go to Indonesia.

Better not to go to Indonesia

When you are flexible in traveling dates, it can be wise to avoid traveling to Indonesia from December to February (except for Bali and Kalimantan). In the period, the rain can make traveling impossible, or difficult in certain parts of Indonesia. Areas like Nusa Tenggara, Flores, Papua and Sumatra can become inaccessible (due to closed ferries or washed out roads), or become prohibitive to travel to. The Mount Rinjani National Park (famous volcano) on the Lombok Island is closed from January to March.

Travelers heading to Java are advised to avoid the final days of the ‘Idul Fitri’. Public transportation can become chaotic and some businesses will be closed.

When you are not restricted to travel during the Western holiday time, it can save money and time to travel outside the busy Christmas time (December and January) and to avoid the months July and August (see ‘general’ section).

It is advisable to avoid traveling to Indonesia at the end of the Ramadan (flexible dates), during this time domestic tourists populate the resorts and prices increase significantly.

Weather and seasons of Indonesia

Indonesia only has two seasons: the wet and the dry season. Despite these two seasons, the climate in Indonesia is fairly even year-round, without winter or summer extremes. The rain is the main changing variable in the weather. The dry season is hotter and drier (less humidity) than the wet season, but there are regional differences. As described before: areas like Bali and Kalimantan don’t experience much difference in the weather during the year, whereas areas like Nusa Tenggara, Flores, Papua and Sumatra experience larger differences.

  •  Dry season: June to October
  •  Rainy season: November to March

Indonesia is experiencing fairly constant temperatures during the year, due to the surrounding warm waters. The following average temperatures have been recorded for Indonesia recently: the coastal areas (28ºC or 82ºF), the inland and lower-mountain areas (26ºC or 79ºF) and the higher mountain areas (26ºC or 73ºF). The nights can be colder in the highlands. See the picture below for an easy weather overview.
